Theme: Energy, Environment & Copper
The International Copper Promotion Council (India) - ICPCI organized the annual India Copper Forum (ICF) 2008 in Mumbai on August 29. ICF brings together various stakeholders in the Indian copper industry to analyze trends, guide future developments and discuss topical issues concerning all the constituents of the copper industry. The theme of this year's event was Energy, Environment & Copper.
India Copper Forum 2008 was attended by ICA members such as BHP Billiton, Codelco, Freeport McMoran & Xstrata ; major Indian producers Hindalco Industries, Sterlite Industries & Jhagadia Copper along with global fabricators including Wieland Werke as well as the leading fabricators and users of copper in India.
India Copper Forum 2008 commenced with the welcome address by Mr. Ajit Advani, Dy. Regional Director - Asia, ICA and CEO, ICPCI who elucidated on copper applications and copper's active participation in development of the Indian economy. In conclusion, he added, "We must ensure that as we build the generating capacity and the distribution systems, we must use the latest energy efficiency technologies to maximize the power availability. Copper is the most efficient metal as it is a long term conductor of electrical energy. Hence, it's important to use the best energy efficient solution, right from the beginning".
Mr. Frank Kane, President, International Copper Association Ltd., who also addressed the seminar mentioned about Minimum energy efficiency performance standards adding, "Efficiency improvement measures at the end-use of electricity consumption will result in the reversal of at-least 25% of climate change impact. Yet consumers, whether institutional or individuals often end up purchasing inefficient products due to an inadequate appreciation of energy efficient equipment which are cheaper over their lifetime, if one calculates the saved energy costs. It is therefore necessary to overcome such barriers by pursuing a strategy of consumer awareness along with the creation of mandatory minimum efficiency performance standards (MEPS), supportive policies and incentive mechanisms."
The ICF presented an unique opportunity for ICA members, ICA and ICPCI top management, Indian fabricators and relevant ancillary industries to interact with each other on one common platform and identify the path forward together.
